Are post offices open on bank holidays and federal holidays?

• United States: USPS closes on federal holidays. For Labor Day 2026, for example, its announcement said that “all Post Office locations will be closed”.
• United Kingdom: there is no single rule. Many Post Office branches are counters inside other shops, and our records show holiday opening varying from branch to branch, so check the one you want.
• Parcel lockers are the fallback on a holiday: of 12,744 UK lockers with recorded hours, 11,961 are recorded as open 24/7.

Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2027 fall on a weekend, so both bank holidays move to Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own lists.

Independence Day 2026 is a Saturday, so the federal holiday is observed on Friday 3 July.

In 2027 Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas Day fall on weekends, so they are observed on the nearest weekday (18 June, 5 July and 24 December).

Opening hours can carry a public-holiday rule: “closed on public holidays” or special holiday hours. This table shows how often each carrier’s recorded hours include one.

A point without a holiday rule is not necessarily open on a holiday; it only means the record does not say.

Lockers recorded as open 24/7 can be used on bank holidays, although whether new parcels are delivered into them that day is up to the carrier. How locker collection works.
